The Italian Ministry has officially published the highly anticipated IMAT 2026 Decree, detailing the essential exam dates, registration deadlines, and syllabus updates every prospective medical student must know before applying

We are talking about the official exam date, when registration opens, the syllabus breakdown, and how you can get your hands on the official PDF.

The Official IMAT 2026 Exam Date

The biggest question everyone has been asking is finally answered. The official IMAT 2026 exam date is set for September 29, 2026.

The exam will take place simultaneously across Italian universities and specific international testing centers. If you are taking the exam in Italy, it kicks off exactly at 1:30 PM (13:30 local time), with international centers adjusting for their time zones. You will have exactly 100 minutes to complete the test.

IMAT 2026 Registration Dates (Don’t Miss This!)

If you are aiming for that 70+ score, the worst thing you can do is miss the registration window. The decree explicitly states that IMAT registrations will open on August 26, 2026.

You must complete your registration through the official portal before the absolute, non-extendable deadline of September 9, 2026, at 3:00 PM (15:00 GMT+2). When you register, you will have to make a final, irrevocable choice between applying for Medicine and Surgery/Dentistry OR Veterinary Medicine.

IMAT 2026 Syllabus & Exam Format Breakdown

The Ministry has kept the IMAT exam format to 60 multiple-choice questions. Each question has five options, and you must select the single correct answer.

Here is exactly how the 60 questions are divided:

• Reading Competency & General Knowledge: 4 questions
• Logical Reasoning & Problems: 5 questions
• Biology: 23 questions
• Chemistry: 15 questions
• Physics & Mathematics: 13 questions

How Your Score is Calculated

The scoring system is highly competitive. Here is the math you need to know:

• +1.5 points for every correct answer
• -0.4 points for every incorrect answer (negative marking!)
• 0 points for skipped questions

The maximum possible score is 90 points. For EU candidates (and non-EU candidates residing in Italy), you must hit a minimum threshold of 20 points to even be placed on the ranking list. For non-EU candidates living abroad, you simply need a score greater than zero (0) to qualify for the ranking.
