IMAT
IMAT Syllabus 2026 (Official Topics + What Actually Comes in Exam)
If you’re preparing for IMAT 2026, the very first thing you need is clarity on the IMAT syllabus.
I still remember the stress I felt when I started — “Should I read everything? What topics REALLY come? Are there topics I can skip?” If you’ve asked these questions too, this article will save you weeks of confusion.
Below, I’ll break down the official IMAT syllabus, explain what’s actually important for the exam, and guide you on how to use it with targeted study plans, practice, and my free syllabus masterclasses.
Simply put your EMAIL below and you will get the PDF of whole syllabus straight to your email and you would be able to download it for FREE.
What Is the IMAT Syllabus?
The IMAT syllabus tells you the topics that can be tested in the International Medical Admissions Test (IMAT) , the exam you must take to get into English-taught Medicine and Surgery programs in Italy.
The syllabus is official, meaning it’s defined by the Italian Ministry of University and Research (MUR). It doesn’t change randomly, so if you know it, you’re already ahead.
Unlike competitive exams that test huge depths of knowledge, IMAT focuses on core concepts applicable across Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Logical Reasoning, and General Knowledge.
- Logical Reasoning & General Knowledge
- Biology
- Chemistry
- Physics
- Mathematics
SUMMARY OF A SYLLABUS:
Every topic in your preparation should come from here, nothing extra. This is your roadmap.
Logical Reasoning & General Knowledge (9 Questions)
What it means: IMAT doesn’t just test facts, it tests your thinking. In this section you’ll see questions based on:
- Critical thinking
- Problem solving
- Analogies
- Assumptions
- Strengthening/weakening arguments
- Logical puzzles
- Short GK questions
Unlike other subjects, this section isn’t tied to textbooks. The key here is practice and familiarity with question types.
📺 I explain every part of logical reasoning PLUS sample questions in my free IMAT Syllabus Masterclasses on YouTube:

Biology (15 Questions)
Biology carries a significant portion of the test and needs solid understanding, but not university-level detail.
You should focus on:
- Cell structure & function
- Biological molecules
- Molecular biology (DNA/RNA)
- Genetics and evolution
- Human physiology (circulatory, respiratory, nervous systems, etc.)
- Ecology basics
📌 Tip: This section is not about memorizing long paragraphs. It’s about understanding how biological systems work, and applying that to questions.
Chemistry (15 Questions)
IMAT chemistry is broad but shallow, meaning core concepts over depth.
Focus on:
- Atomic structure & periodic trends
- Chemical bonding
- Equilibria
- Acids & bases
- Redox reactions
- Organic basics (functional groups, simple reactions)
Remember: IMAT chemistry is often about concept application, not deep calculation.
Physics & Mathematics (13 Questions)
This section combines basic physics and math.
You do not need advanced knowledge, just core ideas + speed.
Physics topics to master:
- Mechanics (motion, forces)
- Energy & work
- Electricity & circuits
- Waves and optics basics
- Heat and thermodynamics
Mathematics:
- Algebra
- Percentages
- Ratios
- Basic probability & statistics
- Graphs and functions
Both physics and math are mostly application-based in IMAT. You should know formulas AND when to use them.
How the IMAT 2026 Syllabus Is Used in the Real Exam
The official syllabus is one thing, what actually comes in the exam is slightly different.
Here’s what I found after analyzing past IMAT papers:
- Logical Reasoning is easy to score if you practice enough
- Biology and Chemistry are predictable — topics repeat
- Physics/Math are less in number but easier if you know formulas
- GK is low weightage — don’t overfocus, but don’t ignore it
In short:
👉 Focus on biology & chemistry first
👉 Then logical reasoning + physics/math practice
👉 Use GK to pick up easy marks at the end
How to Use the IMAT 2026 Syllabus for Your Study Plan
Here’s the strategy I recommend:
Phase 1 — Learn Concepts (3–4 months):
Use the syllabus to guide what you learn. Follow books + lectures for each topic.
Phase 2 — Practice & Revision (1–2 months):
Do IMAT past papers + quizzes. Review mistakes topic-wise.
Phase 3 — Mock Marathon (last 3–4 weeks):
Take full mocks under exam conditions. Analyze errors. Time yourself.
This structured plan, rooted in the syllabus, ensures you cover everything without stress.
